One thing that I confirmed in my first quarter was that I love math. Often times I would find myself losing energy in the midst of a long paper for another class, and in order to take a break I would just do math homework. It's honestly very hard for me to describe why it's so much fun, but I can tell you that the rush I get after completing a long and difficult problem feels so good. That's another thing I learned. I don't like math tests or the simple problems on homeworks. What I really enjoy is when I stumble over a problem, or find myself a little bit stumped. It's great to know that I am going to have to really be creative and work hard in order to solve a problem, and it makes getting the right answer that much sweeter.
I think I can take away two things from enjoying math so much this quarter. The first is recognizing that I enjoy doing math, and that maybe I should look into majoring in something that uses a lot of math, as I'm still undecided. The second is that I should take that energy and joy that I have while doing math and make sure that I apply the same amount of energy and try to gain the same amount of joy in other subjects. Maybe if I treat every subject with the same attitude as I treat math I can make my overall education at UW even more rewarding.
